Abortion began in ancient times, but a raging debate still revolves around this issue, sparked by the supreme court decision Roe v. Wade. Abortion is defined by Merriam Webster as the "termination of a pregnancy." Read on to consider the two major sides on the issue: hear the voices of the conservative and the liberal. Abortion: Pro-Life or Pro-Choice?The debate around abortion essentially boils down to when an individual is alive and has a right to his or her life. Those who are opposed to abortion believe that life begins as soon as conception occurs. These individuals hold the opinion that the embryo has a right to life as soon as the egg is fertilized. Those who believe life begins at conception are generally referred to as pro-life. Individuals in favor of allowing abortion, generally, hold the opinion that life does not begin at conception, but rather when an indivual is born (exits the womb). Those who believe life begins at birth are generally referred to as pro-choice. There is also controversy surrounding when, during a pregnancy, an abortion can be performed. This is discussed in another ConsiderPolitics.com article. ConservativeConservatives are, by and large, against abortion. They are usually considered "pro-life." LiberalLiberals are, by and large, in favor of allowing abortion. The are usually considered "pro-choice." |
